This rectangular acoustic panel hangs in the current band hall and has been decorated with an excerpt of the report given in the Western Mail newspaper of the band’s historic victory at the 1876 Welsh National Eisteddfod in Wrexham.
On
Friday 25th August 1876, the Western Mail newspaper reported on the success,
adding that as part of the prize the band had to remain in Wrexham for three
days ‘to perform at each day’s
services’ for the sum of £10.00 per day – seemingly stopping them
competing at another contest in Rhayder on what would surely have been a long,
celebratory journey home!
As it is, they must be content for the present with the laurels they have won. They have established a reputation, and have now only to stick well together, attend to their instructor, and go on towards the top rung of the ladder of fame - Western Mail newspaper, 25th August 1876
It ended, as can be seen by stating: ‘As it is, they must be content for the present with the laurels they have won. They have established a reputation, and have now only to stick well together, attend to their instructor, and go on towards the top rung of the ladder of fame’.
The aim of this Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) supported project is to provide an on-line multi-media resource that will celebrate and interpret the historical importance of the social, cultural and musical achievements of Tredegar Town Band over a time-line of the past 170 years – from the earliest reported origins in 1849 to date.
