2016 marked the 140th anniversary of the formal constitution of Tredegar Town Band – making it one of the oldest continually surviving brass bands in Wales.
However, its starting point was heralded almost 30 years before, when the band was first mentioned in local press reports, leading a procession to the opening of a new iron mill in the town in 1849.
The aim of this Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) supported project is to provide an on-line multi-media resource that will celebrate and interpret the historical importance of the social, cultural and musical achievements of Tredegar Town Band over a time-line of the past 170 years – from the earliest reported origins in 1849 to date.
It will be reflected in a local, regional, national and international context using the musical resources of Tredegar Town Band linked to other local organisations, societies and groups.
Appropriate guidance, help and links will be developed with other bodies such as People’s Collection Wales, and Gwent Archives and by following Heritage Lottery Good Practice guidance.
It is the aim to develop a proactive musical and cultural legacy that can be continually managed, enhanced and utilised by both the local community and people throughout the world.
It is agreed that the project will be completed by 31st December 2018.
