During the Second World War 1970’s pop record producer Mickie Most was evacuated as a child to Tredegar from his home in London. He retained affection for the town and the welcome the people gave him throughout his life, up until his death in May 2003.  

In 1979 on holiday in France and armed with video cassettes of programmes to look over, he heard by chance the band perform and thought that following the success of the Brighouse & Rastrick Band with ‘The Floral Dance’ pop single release in 1977 he could repeat the success with Tredegar on his RAK Record label.

At the time the label boasted successful acts such as Suzi Quattro, Hot Chocolate and Mud, and the choice of music to be featured was Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Send in the Clowns’   

The soloist was the band’s flugel horn player Jane Russell, whilst the B side featured an up tempo piece specially arranged for the band entitled, ’The Elite Squad’.
