Flugel Horn

Cerys Hughes

Cerys hails from the seaside town of Tywyn in North Wales.

Initially starting out on the cornet at the age of 8 for the Abergynolwyn Silver Band, Cerys made her way up the ranks and became the band's principal cornet by the time she reached 12 years old. She took an interest in the flugelhorn and took the opportunity to join the Oakeley Silver Band in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 2014, conducted by Cerys' Gwynedd Youth Band conductor John Glyn Jones. Cerys' interest in brass playing intensified after becoming a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, where she held the principal flugelhorn position for 3 years. At the 2018 course, Cerys was awarded the John Childs Memorial Shield for the 'Most Promising Member of the NYBBW'.

Cerys moved down to Cardiff in 2018 to begin her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, under the direction of Owen Farr and Dr Robert Childs. Cerys became a member of both the City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) M1 band and Tongwynlais Temperance band respectively during her studies, and was a regular soloist in entertainment programmes and concerts. Cerys was awarded the Linda Mowat Solo Brass Prize in 2022, shortly before graduating with a first-class honours degree.

Cerys joined the Aldbourne band in the summer of 2022, conducted by Glyn Williams. She was a regularly featured soloist during concerts, as well as recording a solo track on the band’s newly released CD, ‘Rejoicing’. A particular highlight for Cerys’ time with Aldbourne was securing 3rd at the 2022 British Open Championships - the highest placing in the band’s history, as well as Cerys’ first appearance at the contest!

Cerys joined Tredegar in January of 2024, but is no stranger to the band having performed with them on many occasions, including the 2022 European Championships at Symphony Hall, as well as performing at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, alongside the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
