Principal Euphonium

Siôn Rhys Jones

Siôn began his musical journey playing in the Abergynolwyn Silver Band in North Wales, under the direction of Aled Williams, who had a significant influence on his formative years.

While growing up in Gwynedd, Siôn was part of Gwasanaeth Cerdd Ysgolion Gwynedd a Môn (the Gwynedd and Anglesey Music Service), where he played solo euphonium in both brass bands and the symphonic wind band. He was also a member of numerous bands during this time, playing with groups such as the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, Beaumaris, and Northop during successful periods.
In 2012, Siôn moved to Cardiff to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama under David and Robert Childs. He won numerous solo and ensemble competitions, including ‘Y Rhuban Glas’ (the Blue Ribbon) at the National Eisteddfod, and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Competition.

From 2016 until 2022, Siôn was the 2nd euphonium player in the Cory Band, sitting next to his childhood euphonium idol, Glyn Williams. He achieved significant success during his six-year tenure with Cory, with the 2019 Grand Slam being a particular highlight (European Champions, British Open Champions, National Champions, and Brass in Concert Champions). In addition to competitive success, Siôn was part of the band's tours to countries such as the United States and South Korea, as well as concerts and workshops throughout Europe.

At the end of 2022, Siôn moved to Tredegar to play solo euphonium. Alongside his playing, he conducts Crosskeys Silver Band, which has seen great success under his leadership. He is also a music teacher at Bro Morgannwg School in the Vale of Glamorgan. Siôn fills any remaining time in his busy schedule with workshops and concerts as a guest player or conductor.
